Japanese Son of Dawn

This may have been the last product released by Dengeki Bunko before their license expired in the late 90s. The original book was written by Dixie McKeone for TSR, and was published in April 1995; the Japanese translation came in 1997 in two volumes, translated by Hitoshi Yasuda and Michiko Kasai.

For more on the novel itself, I highly recommend Francesco Defferrari’s extended summary of it over at The Piazza. You can see the original’s illustrations there, too, as Robin shared them on her DeviantArt profile.

What interests us here, of course, is the art. All of the books’ art was by Jun Suemi, while the maps were by Mari Sugiyama (probably of this site). That’s right: there were maps.

Let’s take a look.

The first volume had the shadow elf shaman Calenderi on the cover. There’s even a nice full page version of the art on the first page. The second and third pages featured a double page spread of the fight with the hydra.

I’m afraid this is the best scan I could get without destroying my copy of the book.

On the back of this, the fourth page contained the map.

And unlike the English version, the map here is in full colour! Mari Sugiyama recreated the original simple line art maps in a beautiful hand-painted style.

Finally, there were five other illustrations scattered throughout the novel.

Many of the characters got an illustration, and the style is slightly different from the English version’s art.

The second volume follows the exact same pattern.

The cover this time features (I think) Dav and the blue dragon, Bletinferelth.

The two page spread again features the dragon, but I’m not sure who the characters below it are. It’s been too long since I read this book.

The map is near-identical, but I’m including my scan of it just for completeness.

And finally, here are the book’s internal illustrations:

Once again, some really nice character pieces here.

If anyone wants to provide captions, I’ll be happy to add them in.
