Håvard’s Elemental Plane of Fire
Following on from his map of Mystara’s Solar System, Håvard began a series of maps concentrating on the Multiverse — beginning with the Elemental Planes. This is the first entry in the series, the Plane of Fire. He completed all four of the Elemental Planes in a short period in July 2016.
The basic concept follows Frank Mentzer’s descriptions from the Companion, Master and Immortals rules sets, which state that the Elemental Planes are coterminous with the Prime Plane. They consist of areas of empty space, as well as “planets” and other materials. Mystara has equivalent planets in all four Elemental Planes, although this is not necessarily true of all worlds.
In short, the same geography can be considered to appear on the Elemental Planes as on Prime Plane Mystara — albeit adjusted to fit the single-element matter of each plane.
For his map of the Plane of Fire, Håvard researched and brought in as many fire-based references as he could, from across Mystara’s publication history. There are numerous monster-derived locations, as well as elements from the Gazetteer series as well as from various modules.
Although it may seem obvious now, this map was revolutionary at the time. In particular, the way it explicitly tied Known World geography to the Elemental Planes was genius, because it opened up the planes for intuitive exploration by players, as well as easy use by DMs.
