Ramelin’s Blackheart, 8 miles per hex
This was among a set of maps Jose posted to his Pinterest page in late January 2016. The other maps mostly featured regions such as Kavkaz and parts of Norwold, but this one did something entirely different, picking up where Bruce Heard had left off in his 2012-2013 work on Alphatia. To elaborate, Bruce left three provinces unfinished: Blackheart, the Imperial Territories, and Shiye-Lawr. Jose put his particular talent for expanding maps in the same style as the originals to great effect, finishing the work that Bruce had begun.
Blackheart was the first province that Jose tackled. Bruce had already mapped the northern half on the edge of his Frisland map, so it was probably the easiest of the three to complete. The result was highly impressive, to the point that it would be hard to tell which parts were Bruce’s and which were Jose’s.
There were still two provinces to cover, but this map was the first step towards a completed 8 mile per hex map of Alphatia.
I would be amiss if I didn’t mention that in fact Jose’s was not the first complete map of Blackheart; that honour went to Sturm’s Blackheart, which he completed way back in 2006. Unfortunately, he didn’t share it online until 2018. With two great maps of Blackheart available to us, the ultimate map remains to be made: a hybrid mixing the best parts of both maps.
