Agathokles’ Northeastern Karameikos, 3.4 miles per hex
Giampaolo’s close-up Karameikos map is much more than just a reprisal of B10. In fact, he brings together locations and terrain from a wealth of sources, both official and fan-made. So you can see B10’s Sukiskyn, Xitaqa, and Gnomish Mine, alongside B11’s Stallanford, the Basic Set’s Castle Mistamere, Karameikos: Kingdom of Adventure’s Eltan’s Spring, and Hail the Heroes’ Zadreth. But you can also find Gorenenov from Jennifer Guerra’s Traladara Mini-Gazetteer, Rick LaRue’s Goldleaf from Mystara netMAG 5, and lots of things from Simone Neri’s Threshold, 2.7 miles per hex map. And that’s just a selection of the sources — there are lots more. You can find more of these in Giampaolo’s article at the Vaults.
For me, this map represents the maturation of our community. In it, Giampaolo expertly combines all the available source materials he could find, resulting in a map that is full to the brim with adventure possibilities old and new, official and fan-made. And it still has lots of room for new adventures, too. This is an early example of the direction one section of the community would take.
But I would be amiss if I neglected to mention the scale. As mentioned in the posts for some of his other maps, Giampaolo often uses rather unique scales for his maps. I calculated this one to be 3.4 miles per hex, and Giampaolo confirmed this to be correct.
