Dungeon Master Gaz’s Karameikos
This map was part of a challenge to create and post a map every day over at the ProFantasy Forums. In the words of Dungeon Master Gaz, the cartographer:
I created this map as part of a map-a-day challenge I set for myself on the Profantasy forums. It took me around 2-3 hours to complete and I used CC3+ with the 13th-Age style and Shaded Relief Cartographer’s Annual assets.
I discovered role-playing (of a sort) back in the very early 80’s, with the publication of Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone’s The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. It was a solo choose-your-own-adventure book and the first in their Fighting Fantasy series. From there, I progressed to a true role-playing game called Tunnels & Trolls, which also provided choose-your-own-adventure style solo modules, allowing me to explore my new hobby further. After gaming through all the solo adventures, I found a group of friends who were interested in trying out a role-playing game and bought the red box Basic Set of Dungeons & Dragons and the blue box Expert Set with the artwork of Larry Elmore on the covers. The Expert Set gave the town of Threshold and the Grand Duchy of Karameikos as an example campaign setting to support the new wilderness rules and introduced me to the Known World of Mystara. The setting holds a special place for me, having provided countless hours of enjoyment playing D&D with my friends and pouring over the maps in the many Gazetteers. For that reason, I chose to make the first map in my map-a-day challenge a tribute to Karameikos.
I couldn’t put it any better myself. Karameikos is such a well-known and beloved setting that many a fan has created their own version of its map. Welcome to the Atlas of Mystara, Dungeon Master Gaz. Thank you for your contribution to Mystara.
