Mark’s Isle of Dawn, 8 miles per hex v2
In July 2021, two months after posting his Ochalea map, Mark posted his finished Isle of Dawn redo (second below) at his web site. As I mentioned in the post for Ochalea, he rescaled the Isle of Dawn to allow it to fit properly in the space available. In his own words:
This is scaled at 92.5% of the map from the Dawn of the Emperors. This allows it to fit neatly in the space as indicated in the Master’s map. Also as part of this, there was a slight re-jigging of the positioning of the Alatians compared to DotE, but nothing major, scaling was kept consistent.
The map itself was based largely off my previous Isle Dawn map (over ten years old now), along with Thorfinn Tait, Simone Neri, Ignacio Ramos, Thibault Sarlat.
Although he had completed a map of the Isle of Dawn as early as April 2006, Mark was drawn away from his projects before he could assemble a fully labelled version. So this was his first comprehensive map of the area. He drew on the work of cartographers who had detailed more of the Isle of Dawn in the intervening years to fill out more of his map.
By January 2022, he had also finished the mammoth task of reproducing Bruce Heard’s Alphatia, and he spent some time that month updating all of his trail maps. There was some iteration of versions at this point as he fixed typos and glitches that had crept in — inevitable given the level of detail involved with these maps. By the end of the month, he posted the completed version (first below). (I have skipped the in between versions, all of which date to earlier in January 2022.)
Mark was not the first to finish a map of the Isle of Dawn at this scale, but his map is certainly one of the most complete. It’s a testament to the quiet persistence and effort of Mystara’s cartographers, as well as our cooperation.
