Sea of Dread Underwater, 24 miles per hex (1984)
Following on the heels of X6’s map, which included depth markings, X7 introduced an entirely new style of map: an underwater map. In addition to using colours to show depths, X7 also added terrain to the sea floor. It did so using regular mountain and hill hexes. Then there are kelp and kelp forest hexes; a few months earlier the Companion Rules Set had introduced similar symbols, but this was the first map to make use of this kind of thing.
The updated version below uses standardised coastlines and rivers from the Brun, 24 miles per hex 1984 map. The islands also match that map precisely. It also had smoothed out depths in place of X7’s hex-shaped system. Finally, I have added in labels for the countries and settlements around the Sea of Dread.
Chronological Map (January 2022)
This map is part of the Mystara 1984 series of chronological maps. It is an updated map, incorporating all available sources and made internally consistent with other maps in its series. But it only uses sources published in or before 1984.
For more information, see Appendix C: Cartographic Chronology.

Revisions
For detailed notes, see the posts for each individual source map at the links above.
- Depths — X7 presented depths as coloured hexes, so I have smoothed them into less angular shapes. I have also added shallower depths around Teki-nura-ria and the other X8 islands to fit them into the map.
- Islands — As noted in the Analysis for XSOLO’s map, I have used the slightly clearer shapes of the islands from XSOLO, but shrunk down to match the size and locations of the X1 version of the islands. Teki-nura-ria and its nearby islands did not appear until after X7, so they have been added to this map.
