Sturm’s Isle of Dawn Central, 8 miles per hex
Less than a year after Thibault produced his final Isle of Dawn, 8 miles per hex v4 map, Francesco composed his own version of the central area of the island continent. It was his first foray into the world outside of Davania. He went further than Thibault, adding new settlements and map labels, as well as borders and trails. Francesco’s terrain is similar to Thibault’s, but with different terrain choices and detailing, suggesting that he worked from the official 24 mile per hex map rather than Thibault’s more detailed 8 mile per hex expansion.
This map is significant for various reasons, not the least of which is that, like Thibault’s map before it, Francesco’s map has been repeatedly used as a building block by successive cartographers. Jose Ignacio Ramos Lomelin used it in his Ramelin Mystara map of the Isle of Dawn in 2017, keeping most of Francesco’s labels while adding many more of his own. More recently, Michele Carpita zoomed in to a subsection of this map in 2021, again developing a wealth of new detail based around Francesco’s original sketch of the area.
