Anondson’s Known World South, 8 miles per hex
This is the southern part of Eric Anondson’s Re-Arranged Known World project, which he unveiled in 2014. It shows most of the area traditionally associated with the Known World. There are large overlaps with the other two maps in the project, Known World North and the Great Waste.
Even with just a glance, the changes are quite clear to anyone familiar with the original Known World. Eric aimed to move things around to make a little more sense, and this included not just shifting nations around but also inverting them east-west, and even rotating them; the hex grid is particularly suited to this kind of thing.
Some of the major changes include: Ylaruam shifted to the edge of the Sind Desert, with Heldann moved south to take its place; Ethengar moved up onto the Adri Varma Plateau, with Rockhome moving north to take its place, and also that of Heldann; the Northern Reaches shifted around and expanded; Alfheim, Darokin, the Five Shires, Karameikos, Ierendi and Minrothad flipped east-west, with Darokin expanded to fill gaps; more land for the Broken Lands; and the removal of Atruaghin.
There’s an awful lot going on here! For a full explanation, see Eric’s overview at the Vaults.
This project was the first to redo the Known World in such detail. For more on this, see also his Mappers of Mystara article.
The most recent map is a high resolution export, with slightly different art and palette. Two older versions are also available below.
