Brun, 24 miles per hex (1983)
1983 saw the first expansion outside the Known World (though it wasn’t yet known as such). Although the shape of the entire continent wouldn’t become clear until the next year — and its name not until 1990 — these core areas were already in place.
The way they are linked up here is not the only possible configuration, and the Known World/Great Waste join in particular is rather ambiguous. Because of this, the area around the Asanda River would suffer from a number of misplacements over the following years.
The other striking thing about the world at this stage is its bare bones nature, particularly outside the Known World area, where vast tracts of wilderness with the occasional largely undeveloped civilised region were the order of the day. This, too, would change in succeeding years, and the process had already begun in 1983, with the additions to Karameikos.
Chronological Map (December 2021)
This map is part of the Mystara 1983 series of chronological maps. It is an updated map, incorporating all available sources and made internally consistent with other maps in its series. But it only uses sources published in or before 1983.
For more information, see Appendix C: Cartographic Chronology.
