Kal’s Brun South, 24 miles per hex

This map was the last of a set of three Andrea posted in 2005. The other two were Bellissaria and Esterhold and Brun North. It’s also the primary map of the set, showing most of the continent of Brun and extending east far enough to cover half of Alphatia.

Interestingly, although there are strong similarities to Thibault’s Mystara, 24 miles per hex map from a few years earlier, Andrea put the world together rather differently. A close examination suggests that he went back to the source maps and pieced everything together himself, rather than simply copying Thibault’s map. This is especially clear when comparing the Known World-Norwold join, the Isle of Dawn, and the Savage Coast — to name but a few.

The different interpretation is likely due to two factors: first, the inherent ambiguities present in the original maps, and specifically how they are meant to join up; and second, the lack of hex maps for large chunks of the continent.

In addition, Andrea also incorporated quite a lot of features of his own campaign. Take a look at the grassy plains of Ylaruam, the expanded and more desolate Adri Varma Plateau, or just the much larger Realm of Wendar — again, to name just a few.

Despite these customisations, this map (and its companions and successors) quickly became an anchor point for all sorts of other projects. Although Thibault’s map had been around for a few years already by this point, and indeed was far more standard in terms of construction and design, the more familiar art style made Andrea’s immediately accessible to a wider audience. This only intensified as he continued to expand it over the next few years.

As with the other two maps, Andrea made his map in Italian, while also releasing a variant without any labels. Both versions are included below.
