Timothy Klanderud’s Mystara
In late 1998, graphic artist Timothy Klanderud posted this amazing rendition of Mystara’s Outer World to the Internet. It rapidly gained the attention and admiration of the Mystara community, with Shawn Stanley displaying it prominently on the title page of the Vaults of Pandius.
Although it’s unfortunately not very high resolution, everything else about the map is incredible. It would be 20 years before someone posted anything even vaguely approaching this level of realism and quality. Even today Timothy’s image, which has since become an iconic part of Mystara’s history, remains very popular.
The map is largely based on the Master Set version of the world map, but references the Hollow World Set version for terrain. While Brun, Davania, and the islands of the Alphatian Sea (including sunk Alphatia) all take their overall shapes from the Master Set, Skothar is clearly based on the Hollow World Set. This has since become common practice in many fan maps, sometimes referred to as “big Skothar”.
