Solmyr’s Alphatian Region
Aleksei Andrievski, aka Solmyr, was one of Mystara’s first digital fan cartographers. His primary interest was in making political maps, often for use in play-by-email games focusing on diplomacy. Although he has not been active in the community for a long time now, he left us with two nice sets of maps from our community’s early days.
This map is from a set of Campaign Cartographer maps shared on Aleksei’s web site. It was created on the program’s oldest version, CC-DOS, and Aleksei posted the maps in Campaign Cartographer’s FCD format rather than in a regular image format. As such, I had to convert them in order to post them here at the Atlas. I don’t have access to CC-DOS myself, so I asked for help at ProFantasy’s forums. There, a very kind man called Remy Monsen converted the whole set to PNG files. The resulting images should be close to how the maps would originally have looked.
The map below had the filename “PlayerMP”. It is a bare-bones overview of the Alphatian Region and its surroundings, likely intended for player use. As with all of Aleksei’s maps from this period, it is composed of simple line-art on a white canvas, without any use of solid colours. Compared to modern maps, it seems minimalist to the extreme, and yet it is also clear and functional.
Fan-made Map by Aleksei Andrievski (October 1997)
This is an original map created by one of Mystara’s excellent fan cartographers. For more information on the cartographer, including a gallery of all their maps, see also Appendix M: Mappers of Mystara.
The Atlas has been unable to contact the original cartographer. This map therefore appears here without explicit permission from its creator. Any information on how to get in touch with them would be most welcome.
